X-Men: Dark Phoenix to mark X-Men's entrance into the MCU

04.01.2018

As we all know, Disney recently bought 20th Century Fox for the price tag of around $60 billion, which may seem like a lot, but for Disney is just a bit of Sunday shopping after a nice brunch. After the deal, many began to wonder if/when certain properties like the X-Men would find themselves in the MCU, with many talking heads saying it would take lots of time for something like that to happen. Well, it turns out it may not be that long of a wait because a new report says the X-Men could be gearing up for the big transition as early as next year.

Earlier this week we got news that X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX was being pushed back a solid three months, and later on we learned this was to add some pretty major reshoots, especially in the third act. Now, a source speaking to THR says those reshoots will be to add scenes that will tie in directly to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Boom, people!

Not much was revealed beyond that, only that people from Fox and Marvel have been “talking for a few months now, and have determined that Dark Phoenix will make a perfect transition point.” Do we need to know anything else beyond the fact that this, if true, is earth-shattering, life-affirming news that makes the world a happier, more beautiful place to live?

When looking at the story of DARK PHOENIX it does make a lot of sense. This movie, as we know, will be set in the 90s and involve the team experiencing a dangerous solar flare that causes Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) to begin to go through changes. Perhaps this plot will also factor into the story of the upcoming MCU movie CAPTAIN MARVEL, which will also take place in the 90s and involve an alien plot with the Kree/Skrull.

No word yet on if actors like Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender. James McAvoy would return for the MCU films, or if the studio would recast. Given that the future MCU movie would probably take place over 20 years after the events of DARK PHOENIX recasting is the only real approach that would make sense. However, those characters clearly haven't aged a day since the events of FIRST CLASS, so perhaps they will just go, "Nah...they're 62."

It seems likely that the X-Men will make their way over to the MCU at some point, and maybe this is their way of doing it other than rebooting the series with new actors. Of course, this would open up holes as to how the actions of the X-Men have not been noticed in the world of the MCU until now, but, hey, those are kinks that can be worked out.

X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX is currently slated to be released on February 14th, 2019.
