New Andy Barclay cast as Child's Play remake begins filming

09.20.2018by: Mike Sprague

We just brought you word yesterday that MGM's upcoming reboot of CHILD'S PLAY had snagged Aubrey Plaza to play Andy's Mom (played in the original by Catherine Hicks) and Brian Tyree Henry to play new Detective Mike Norris (played in the original by Chris Sarandon).

And today we have words that young Andy Barclay has been cast with LIGHTS OUT star Gabriel Bateman (see above) taking on the role. Not only that, but the studio released an official synopsis, which reads:

Child’s Play follows a mother (Plaza) who gives her son (Bateman) a toy doll for his birthday, unaware of its more sinister nature.

Bateman seems a bit old to be playing Andy but I guess this makes sense given we've heard in the past that this reboot was going to be more in line with STRANGER THINGS and follow a group of kids who must fight for their lives after "a technologically-advanced doll enters their world." I guess we'll have to wait and see just what shakes out as filming on the remake kicked off today. Hopefully, this means more info will be flooding in as the month goes on. Stay Tuned!

For those who may have forgotten, the original followed the tale of

Gunned down by Detective Mike Norris (Chris Sarandon), dying murderer Charles Lee Ray (Brad Dourif) uses black magic to put his soul inside a doll named Chucky -- which Karen Barclay (Catherine Hicks) then buys for her young son, Andy (Alex Vincent). When Chucky kills Andy's babysitter, the boy realizes the doll is alive and tries to warn people, but he's institutionalized. Now Karen must convince the detective of the murderous doll's intentions before Andy becomes Chucky's next victim.

The original 1988 film was directed by Tom Holland from a screenplay written by Don Mancini. It starred Catherine Hicks, Dinah Manoff, Chris Sarandon, Alex Vincent, and Brad Dourif as the voice of Chucky. The remake is directed by Lars Klevberg (POLAROID) from a screenplay written by KUNG FURY 2 writer Tyler Burton Smith with STEPHEN KING'S IT producers David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith producing.
